August Savings Goals

August Savings Goals

What did I get up to this August?

I purchased presents for a one-year old, an eight-year old, and a baby-to be! What I’m learning this year is that August is definitely a big month for birthdays (and I thought July was bad!) I also went Prince Edward County for a weekend, I renewed my Bike Share membership, I went to the Canadian National Exhibition three times, saw Robyn and Rokysopp, and, well, I overspent by a bit, hence my September No-Buy / Low-Buy. But did I stick to my August savings goals amid all this spending? Let’s see…

TFSA/Emergency Fund

August – Goal $500/month. Actual: $500

To continue my July momentum, my August savings goal for my TFSA continued to be fairly high! How? Well, it’s still summer so I’m saving on public transportation by cycling 3-5 days a week (savings of at least $100 a month!) and my recent change in employment gave me a bit more breathing room and covered up for my shopping excess this month! (Thank goodness!)

August – Goal: $250/month. Actual: $250 ($250 in my Tangerine RSP Mutual Fund)

This is an automatic deduction so I don’t think about it very much. Soooo boring. My goal for September is to transfer my old RRSP from my previous employer to my new fund with Tangerine.

Vacation Fund

August – Goal: $75/month. Actual: $75, automatic monthly withdrawal.

Looking forward to a trip to New Orleans in November!

Additional Savings

(i.e. new laptop fund, new phone, couch, big-ticket items)
June – Goal: $50/month. Actual: $100

Since purchasing my new laptop last month, this account has been a little bare. My next goal with this account is to help me a) buy out my Rogers contract/ help me save up for a new phone for the winter and b) Christmas present savings!

April Savings Goal: $625. Actual: $550 (-$75)

May Savings Goal: $800. Actual: $975 (+$175)

June Savings Goal: $825. Actual: $825 (+$0)

July Savings Goal: $875. Actual: $925 (+$50)

August Savings Goal: $925. Actual: $925(+$0)

Plans for September

I FINALLY repaid my TFSA for all the money I withdrew from it to finish off my student loan in March, so now anything I add to it in the last FOUR months of the year is pure bonus money! And since I’m on a Low-Buy / No-Buy next month, I plan to save at least $1000 in September! I’m also embarking upon a 10 Day Minimalism Challenge, throwing out 1 item on Day 1, two items on Day 2 and so on, look forward to my first update on this challenge later in the week.

What are your goals for September? Making up for some summer excess? Getting ready for winter spending?
