Personal Finance Winner’s Circle: A positive net worth?
It’s been an exciting week for personal finance writers. First, Michelle from Making Sense of Cents announced that she was officially debt-free and an avalanche of joy spread through the Twitter-sphere. Then Bridget got inspired and cashed in some of her emergency fund to also emerge debt-free and victorious! While we were all living vicariously through these achievements, I stumbled upon an unexpected realization of my own.
Next month I will have a positive net-worth!
For those keeping track, one of my goals for this year was to have a positive net worth by December. Somehow I bungled my math (I think it was due to my generous tax return and side-jobs) and I took a look at my accounts today and did a double take. I’m currently $100 away! (Slightly further now, as I had to buy a VIA Rail ticket, a birthday present and a baby shower gift.) But this time next month, perhaps even after just one more paycheque, I’m squarely in the green!
This may not seem like a big deal for some, but I haven’t had a positive net worth since I was 18 — a DECADE AGO. A decade ago I was living at home for my final months until University, I hadn’t yet signed away my life for student loans (although I was close to it) and I wasn’t sure about what I wanted to do when I grew up.
A decade later and I STILL don’t know what I want to do when I grow up, but at least I know I’m on the right track.
Any exciting financial developments in your life this week?
